The decision between central or string inverters for utility-scale solar farms is not always easy. Here is a high-level comparison between the two technologies.
Ingeteam recommends string inverters for projects <10MW, and central inverters for even larger projects >10MW, according to Carlos Lezana, marketing and communications for solar for Ingeteam. “The larger the scale, the greater the savings,” Lezana said. Thus, central inverters are predicted to hold greater market share on multi-MW projects, especially when higher voltages are becoming more common.
While the initial cost of string inverters is higher, the advantages in power optimization, the lack of a single point of failure, and the ease of serviceability are significant. For sites that are remote and/or do not have well-established service networks, string inverters are a clear winner.
