EdgeRouter PoE vs EdgeRouter SFP - What is different about these two Ubiquiti Routers?

Divya Agrawal 10/31/2018

Mainly the presence/absence of a SFP port, number of switching ports and some differences with regards to hardware offloading.

EdgeRouter PoE (ERPoe-5) has three ports specified for switching function - eth2, eth3, and eth4 can be configured for switching using the EdgeOS Configuration Interface. In EdgeRouter PoE, bridged interfaces are not enabled for hardware offloading.

EdgeRouter SFP (ER-X-SFP) has all six ports configurable for Line-rate, Layer-2 switching (5 Gigabit RJ45 Ports and 1 SFP Port). The hot-swappable SFP Port supports a 100 Mbps or Gigabit fiber SFP module. Finally, in EdgeRouter SFP bridged interfaces are enabled for hardware offloading. The command to enable offloading is ‘hwnat’.

Now the similarities:
• Work great in a SOHO (Small Office Home Office) setup
• Offered at great price-performance ratio
• Not plug and play routers -require an understanding of networking basics for easy setup
• Similar features for hardware offloading (with the exception cited above) and IPsec Offloading
