Livio Filice, Director of Global Sales
I joined Eguana eleven years ago, prior to moving into a position with sonnenBatterie (where I was tasked with creating the first distribution network for advanced lithium battery technology in North America), followed by a role at Mercedes-Benz Energy (where I was responsible for creating a distribution network for its residential energy storage products).
In 2018, I rejoined Eguana Technologies to develop and execute a sales strategy that would rapidly expand its footprint into all major solar PV markets throughout North America and the Caribbean. Since rejoining, the company has created an extensive network of partners in the solar market with an impressive fleet of installed systems operating flawlessly in Puerto Rico, the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, New England, Florida, Georgia, California, Colorado, Texas, Hawaii, and the Pacific Islands.
Eguana's headquarters are located in Calgary, Alberta, with a regional sales office and a product-assembly facility located in Los Angeles, California, which offers a team of local sales and technical support individuals.
Looking forward, Eguana is scheduled to release a higher-power-rated Evolve unit in the summer of 2021. The higher-power-rated Evolve unit will deliver 10KW AC of continuous power with 28KWh of energy storage capacity by utilizing the same electronics, mechanical enclosure, user interface, and warranty offering as the current Evolve product. Eguana, along with our network of partners, is thrilled to be rolling out a product that will address larger solar PV arrays while delivering more backup power to homeowners across North America and the Caribbean.
Below, I discuss the key product advantages and features of Eguana’s Evolve LFP energy storage system. I strongly encourage any interested partners to reach out to our partners at Renvu or directly to me to learn more about our products and explore ways to collectively advance the residential solar-energy storage market and the overall shift to a sustainable energy-based future.
About Evolve LFP
Evolve is a fully-integrated residential energy-storage system that includes its proprietary power electronics system, Pylontech’s low-voltage lithium iron phosphate battery modules, and a comprehensive user interface.
The system is rated at 5 kW AC output with a modular battery design starting at 14 kWh capacity, which is scalable from 14 to 28 to 39 kWh in storage capacity. The NEMA 3R wall-mounted package is suitable for indoor and outdoor installations.
The package is backed by a 10-year standard warranty. Evolve supports grid-connected solar self-consumption, time of use (TOU) rate shifting, and backup power. Evolve certification standards include: UL1741, UL9540, California’s Rule 21, and Hawaii’s Rule 14H. Evolve is approved on various financing and incentive lists, including California’s SGIP and Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC).
Modularity and expandability of battery capacity
Evolve base unit is equipped with 14KWh of Pylontech’s low voltage battery modules.
The system can easily be expanded by adding another battery cabinet to the system, which increases storage capacity to 28KWh.
A third battery cabinet increases capacity to 42KWh.
Battery capacity can easily be expanded without the need to add inverters and other hardware, which promotes significant cost savings.
As noted above, the base Evolve system starts at 5KW AC / 14KWh, expandable to 28KWh and 42KWh of storage capacity. Evolve offers the most cost-competitive AC coupled LFP energy storage product available in North America, at a price range of $450-700 per kWh.
Eguana’s 20-plus years of experience in power electronics and operational excellence has allowed the company to optimize both its technology and supply chain to ensure the product is priced to reach mass-market adoption levels.
Ideal for both new or existing solar PV systems
Evolve is an AC-coupled solution that is suitable for both new and existing solar PV arrays. Evolve is capable of integrating with nearly all solar PV inverters available today.
With over 1 million existing residential solar PV installations installed in California and hundreds of thousands of new installations per year, Evolve is an ideal solution for nearly every solar customer. Evolve allows for maximum system design flexibility and does not force the selection of the solar PV design. Keeping the solar PV separate from the battery automatically allows for maximum system uptime.
Lastly, the AC-coupled design permits the system to be deployed as a stand-alone backup power generator without a solar PV array. As prices continue to decline, there is a tremendous opportunity to deploy large fleets of stand-alone storage assets that can deliver resiliency to homeowners while offering a number of grid services.
Outdoor rated, wall-mounted configuration
Evolve is packaged into a NEMA 3R wall-mounted enclosure. This allows the unit to be installed outdoors in hot-climate markets throughout the USA and the Caribbean. This feature allows for maximum system design flexibility as it delivers more installation options for both the equipment installer and the homeowner. It also expands the addressable market for energy storage, because not every home has a garage or basement or available real estate to accommodate a battery installation.
The unit is easily mounted to a wall, keeping it off the ground and reducing the need for ground-level barriers, especially in parking garages. With over 1,000 Evolve systems deployed at various elevations in Hawaii over a five-year period, the system has not experienced any issues with high salt content in the air.
Leading-edge battery technology - Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP)
Evolve includes industry-leading LFP batteries from Pylontech that deliver superior thermal and chemical stability. The cobalt-free batteries are non-toxic, non-hazardous, incombustible, and thermal-runaway resistant.
Further, the LFP batteries are best known for their durability and high performance: deep-discharge use in daily-cycle applications and 15-year, 6000+ cycle product design.
Energy resiliency and backup power
In the event of grid failure, the Evolve energy storage system forms a microgrid, allowing the solar PV system to continue power generation while managing essential home loads and lithium batteries.
Evolve will ensure that the solar PV array continues to operate during the day, thereby providing power to home loads while charging the battery from the solar PV array. After sunset, Evolve will discharge the lithium batteries into the home loads overnight until sunrise, at which point it will repeat the same cycle.
Thus, Evolve creates an incredibly low-cost, perpetual backup power source ideal for both short- and long-duration power outages.
Cost Savings via solar self-consumption
Evolve allows new and existing residential solar owners to store excess solar power for use in the evening, maximizing their solar investment while recognizing daily savings on their electric bills.
In various markets, traditional net-metering programs have been dismantled. These old programs no longer offer strong incentives for homeowners to export electricity back into the power grid.
Evolve’s software platform allows homeowners to store excess solar PV, produced during daytime hours, to be used at a later point when rates are more expensive, or simply to ensure that 100% of their needs are met from their solar array.
