Enphase’s initial Technical Sizing Process for backup is as follows:
Size PV nameplate for annual energy
Size IQ8 power capability for power demands
Increase storage capacity for desired autonomy (initial ratio of storage to solar recommended by Enphase is 1:1, in other words 1kW of storage to 1kW of PV)
The sizing guidelines for power and energy are as follows:
Power from IQ8 must exceed the larger of the max largest load or total IQ7 or IQ6 nameplate
“690.10 -> 710.15 (A) Supply Output. Power supply to premises wiring systems shall be permitted to have less capacity than the calculated load. The capacity of the stand-alone supply shall be equal to or greater than the load posed by the largest single utilization equipment connected to the system. Calculated general lighting loads shall not be considered as a single load.”
Energy (storage capacity should be sized to provide power to load estimates for a user defined period)
There is a maximum ratio of IQ6 and IQ7 Micros to Encharge, not yet known. This may be announced in future product training sessions, so please stay tuned.
Encharge may not be able to absorb power transients from load steps which could result in voltage spikes. This could trip off IQ8 in Encharge, or damage loads.
