What is a Tier 1 solar panel?
Every quarter Bloomberg New Energy Finance creates a list of solar modules they consider as being Tier 1. You can view Tier 1 modules that Renvu carries here.
Tier 1 module manufacturers are classified by Bloomberg New Energy Finance as being companies that have provided own-brand, own-manufacture solar panels to six 1.5MW+ different projects, which have been financed non-recourse by six different (nondevelopment) banks, in the past two years. You can learn more in-depth about Bloomberg's tiering system here.
Note that being classified Tier 1 is not a guarantee for module quality, nor against bankruptcy. Take the SolarWorld bankruptcy as an example. It was classified as Tier 1 before going bankrupt.
So, what is a Tier 2 solar panel? Or even a Tier 3 solar panel?
The reality is that there’s no such list. A solar panel is either Tier 1 or it is not. While Bloomberg's ranking can be helpful, it’s not a guarantee of quality of product or company. Other factors such as efficiency, wattage and warranty are typically more important indicators so make sure to review solar panel datasheets when making your decision.
