Enphase has now made it possible to upgrade M215 and M250 microinverter-based solar systems to be compatible with Ensemble system components. When first announced in the Spring of 2019, the Ensemble storage system was slated to only be compatible with IQ series micro inverter systems. This was due to the next generation IQ8 microinverter at the heart of every Encharge battery. IQ series microinverters could not be mixed with the M-series because of their incompatible communications protocols.
Fast forward to 2021, and through software and firmware upgrades, M215 and M250 microinverter-based systems can now be used with Ensemble energy storage components such as the Enpower smart switch and the Encharge AC-coupled battery. This expanded compatibility offers approximately 300,000 additional Enphase solar systems the chance to upgrade their solar-only systems and easily add energy storage.
For installers, this creates the opportunity to re-engage with their past Enphase clients and offer energy resilience upgrades.
For homeowners, they can now look forward to enhanced energy independence without the need to completely replace their microinverters or solar panels.
This new capability is not without its caveats and restrictions. Not all Enphase M215 and M250 systems, as built, are compatible. In order to add Enphase energy storage, additional monitoring and control are required. This can only be supported by the Envoy-S Metered. Additional CTs, the Ensemble communication kit, and cell modem must be added to provide both production and consumption data monitoring. Envoy and Envoy-S Standard systems will need to first upgrade to an Envoy-S Metered in order to take advantage of this new capability and add Enphase Energy Storage to their existing M-series solar systems.
M-Series customers are excited to have this new option to upgrade their solar systems with Enphase Storage. This new program represents Enphase’s continued commitment to reliability, service, and long-term customer relationships.
