Note: This Tier 1 ranking is based solely on the financial stability of the manufacturers and should not be interpreted as a measure of solar panel performance or quality. When selecting solar panels for your project, it’s important to consider additional factors such as efficiency, warranty, reliability, and compatibility with your system. Use this list as one reference point among many to find the best PV modules for your specific needs.

Tier 1 vs. Tier 2 Solar Panels: What's the Difference?

When shopping for solar panels, you've probably seen the term "Tier 1" thrown around a lot. But what does it actually mean, and how does it compare to Tier 2? Here's what you need to know.

Tier 1 manufacturers are the most financially stable and established companies in the solar industry. They have been producing panels for at least five years, are publicly listed or have a strong balance sheet, and invest heavily in automated production and quality control. Tier 1 companies make up less than 2% of all solar manufacturers worldwide.

Tier 2 manufacturers is the term used to describe everyone else. There is no official Tier 2 list — it simply refers to any manufacturer that does not meet Tier 1 criteria

Bottom line: If you want panels that will perform reliably for 25 years and have a manufacturer standing behind them, Tier 1 is the smarter investment.
